  1. What is the purpose of life?
  2. The purpose of life is not to be happy,  the purpose of life is to
  3. matter, to have it make some difference that you ever lived at all.

  5. I found that quotation when I was a boy and taped it to the top of
  6. my desk lamp.  For many years I read it almost every day.
  7.   Who am I to ask for your attention?  Time is the most precious
  8.   commodity of all and should not be granted freely to all who seek it.
  9. I work as a senior psychologist in a 100 bed residential treatment
  10. facility; I work in an institution.  It (the Rockland Multiply Disabled
  11. Unit) is operated under the auspices of Letchworth Village Developmental
  12. Disability Services.  I am an employee of N.Y.State's Office of Mental
  13. Retardation and Developmental Disabilities. My unit, we call it "the
  14. MDU", is located on the grounds of a suburban (N.Y.S. Office of Mental
  15. Health-operated) psychiatric center.  Some of my clients (I am
  16. personally responsible for 50) are dually diagnosed meaning they have
  17. been diagnosed as both mentally retarded and psychiatrically impaired.
  18. And in my spare time, I am co-sysop of a large computer bulletin board,
  19. PC-Rockland BBS.

  21.       My basic thesis is that any individual who has demonstrated the
  22.       independent ability to drive a car is functioning adequately in
  23.       this society and therefore should not be classified as mentally
  24.       retarded. Moreover, any individual who cannot drive a car solely
  25.       because of their intellectual limitations should be classified
  26.       as retarded, assuming that they they have been given the
  27.       opportunity to learn the requisite skills, received adequate and
  28.       appropriate training (we need better/cheaper simulators) and
  29.       otherwise meet the AAMD criteria.
  30. Finally, I offer the glimmer of an idea... half-baked so to speak. Might
  31. I have stumbled over the beginning to a fair test of the right to vote?
